This work explores natural environments and materials through instrument building, field recording, aural scoring (inductive performance environment), and free improvisation. Performances combine found objects, DIY instruments, electronic elements, and contact microphones to reveal subtle textures and hidden resonances within materials. Deep listening practices and responsive performance techniques guide the process, with the performers’ close relationships shaping how they hear, react, and co-create in real time.
Following a new materialist approach, the project prioritises process over product, attending to the affective presence of materiality beyond intellectual or representational meaning. It blurs distinctions between nature and culture, promoting agency in the materials at every stage of design and performance. The human impulse to synthesise and refine is tempered, allowing space for the materials to express their own “thing-power.”
To date, this work has been performed at the Ballina Arts Centre and the NCF, Ballina, Co. Mayo.
