Waterwork (2023)

Improvised performance @ O’Riada Hall, Co. Cork, ROI

Field recordings, tape loops, granular synthesis, MaxMSP, IR sensors

Waterwork is concerned with unpredictability and gesture in live-performance practice – as a means of fostering spiritual exploration through music making. The design of the system, the choice of sounds and textures, and the development of specific performance gestures results in a work which, when performed, is deeply ceremonial, soothing and sensual. The work’s unpredictability arises from the combined use of analog and digital technologies such as tape loops and the interactive software MaxMSP. The combined use of tape loops, spectral freezing, and automation and controlled randomness within the software, creates an ever changing space which the performer must be at all times aware of and react to. The implementation of infrared sensors in the work allows for extended performance control and the development of personal ritual-like gestures.
